Hammond, Gurnell and Fox - Part I

Hammond, Gurnell and Fox Families

This series of Pea-Bee’s History Blogs outlines the rather complex business and marital links between three families in the mid 19th century: the Hammond family from Kent, and two Lincolnshire families, Gurnell and Fox.

Parts I & II introduce the Gurnells and Foxes while Part III will look at the Hammonds and then Part IV will how their relationships developed.

Part I

The Gurnells were farmers in North Lincolnshire. The branch we are following originated in Stallingborough in the east of the county and gradually spread westward.

Ø   1803: John Gurnell married Judith Ramsom in the Lincolnshire village of Stallingborough on 15 June[1]. The couple had at least five children, all born in Stallingborough:

#1. George Gurnell (c1804-1891)[2]

#2. Mary Gurnell (c1806-1860)[3]

#3. Winifred Gurnell (?-1838)[4]

#4. Thomas Gurnell (c1816-1865)[5]

#5. Charlotte Joanna Gurnell (c1826-1860)[6]

Judging by dates of birth of the younger children, there were probably other pregnancies although whether they went to full term or any other children born alive survived into adulthood is not known – the records available on-line are fairly thin for this period in Lincolnshire. One other child may have been Joseph Gurnell who was buried at Stallingborough on 2 July 1818 aged three months[7].

Ø   1825: Burial of Judith Gurnell on 29 July at Stallingborough aged 45[8].

Ø   1837: Burial of John Gurnell on 1 February at Stallingborough aged 66[9].

#1 George Gurnell

George Gurnell became a farmer in the parish of Hibaldstow.

Ø   1836 George Gurnell married Ann Thompson in Appleby on 9 June[10]. Ann was born in Appleby in about 1811[11]. The couple had four sons, all born in Hibaldstow:

#1.1 John Gurnell (1837-1890)[12]

#1.2 Edward Gurnell (1838-1899)[13]

#1.3 William Gurnell (1840-1927)[14]

#1.4 George Gurnell (1843-1925)[15]

Ø   1841: George, Ann and three eldest sons in Hibaldstow[16].

Ø   1851: Family living in the hamlet of Sturton-cum-Scawby and, besides farming 100 acres and employing two men, George was innkeeper of the Queen’s Arms[17].

Ø   1861: George, Ann and two of their sons, John and George, at The Lodge, Appleby, where George farmed 500 acres, employing 5 men and 3 boys[18].

Ø   1871: George, Ann and their youngest son George still in Appleby at a place then called Gurnell’s Farm, a 540-acre property which gave employment to 10 men and 3 boys[19].

Ø   1881: George retired and living with Ann in Scunthorpe High Street[20].

Ø   1888: Ann Gurnell died[21].

Ø   1891: George Gurnell died on 5 April in Scunthorpe. His executors were two of his sons – Edward and George – and his personal estate was valued at £276 10s[22].

Of the four sons, three went into farming and the fourth, #1.3 William Gurnell, became a chemist and druggist. His story will be covered in Part II

#1.1 John Gurnell

John lived with his parents in Hibaldstow (1841), Sturton-cum-Scawby (1851) and Appleby (1861).

Ø   1867 John married Ann Cox in North Kelsey, Lincolnshire, on 20 February[23]. She was born in North Kelsey in 1840[24]. The couple had nine children. The first two were born in Appleby in 1868/69; the next five were all born in Normanby between 1871 and 1876; the last two, however, were born in West Torrington in 1878 and 1880[25].

Ø   1871: Family in a farm house in Normanby where John employed 5 men and 3 boys[26].

Ø   1881: Family in West Torrington where John was farming 244 acres and employing 3 men and 2 boys[27].

Ø   1890: John Gurnell died in Holme in the parish of Bottesford on 31 May. His widow Ann was executrix for his estate, valued at £2,624 9s 11d[28].

Ø   1901: Ann Gurnell died on 11 March. The executor of her will was her eldest son Henry, and her estate was valued at £1,035 11s 10d[29].

#1.2 Edward Gurnell

Edward lived with his parents in Hibaldstow (1841) and Sturton-cum-Scawby (1851).

Ø   1861: Edward in Scunthorpe in the home of his widowed aunt Mary Fox (#2 below)[30].

Ø   1871: Edward farming 100 acres in Brumby and employing 1 man[31].

Ø   1872: Edward married a widow, Jane Willson (nee Brackenbury)[32]. She was born in Hogsthorpe in about 1841. The couple had one daughter, Mary (born 1877)[33].

Ø   1881: Family in Brumby where Edward farmed 220 acres in Brumby, employing 8 men, 2 women and a boy. Also in the house was Jenny Willson, described as niece (presumably of Jane’s first husband)[34].

Ø   1891: Family still in Brumby where Edward was a farmer. Also in the house: niece Jenny Willson, brother George Gurnell and nephew (also George Gurnell)[35].

Ø   1899: Edward Gurnell “of Brumby House” died on 4 October. One of his executors was his brother George. The estate was valued at £1,857 6s 9d[36].

#1.4 George Gurnell

George lived with his parents in Sturton-cum-Scawby (1851) and Appleby (1861 and 1871).

Ø   1875: George Gurnell married Eva (Evangeline) Needler at Holy Trinity, Hull, on 4 February[37]. She had been born in Hull in about 1852. The couple had six sons.

Ø   1881: Family at Vicarage Farm, Wootton, where George farmed 184 acres employing 3 men and 2 boys[38].

Ø   1891: George was recorded twice in the census – once with his brother Edward in Brumby (see above) and the second time with his family at the Glebe Farm in Wootton[39].

Ø   1901: George and family back in the Queen’s Arms, Sturton-cum-Scawby, where his father was the innkeeper fifty years earlier. Like his father before him, George was licensee and farmer[40].

Ø   1911: Family still at Queen’s Arms, George as licensee and farmer[41].

Ø   1915: George Gurnell died in Scawby on 15 May and his widow Eva was the executrix for an estate valued at £830 19s 1d[42].

#2 Mary Gurnell

Ø   1848: Mary married George Fox on 28 September at Hibaldstow[43]. He was born in Appleby, in about 1804. The couple were childless.

Ø   1851: Family in Scunthorpe where George farmed 94 acres and employed 2 men[44].

Ø   1859: George Fox died in 1859[45] and was buried on 27 September at St Lawrence, Frodingham  20728.

Ø   1861: Mary in Scunthorpe with nephew #1.2 Edward Gurnell (see above); Mary was farming 80 acres and employed 2 men and 2 boys[46].

Ø   1871: Mary retired and living in Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe[47].

Ø   1880: Mary Fox died on 15 May in Scunthorpe and the executor of her will was her nephew, Edward Gurnell[48]. Her estate was valued at under £500.

#3 Winifred Gurnell

Ø   1832: Winifred married Jonathan Fox on 20 November at Kirmington[49]. He was born in Hibaldstow and baptised there on 26 September 1802. He was son of Richard Fox and Phoebe (nee Kelsey).[50]

It has not proved possible to discover if Jonathan Fox and George Fox were related. Judging by the baptismal records of St Hibald in Hibaldstow, George and Jonathan were not siblings: Jonathan had five siblings all baptised between 1800 and 1809[51]. They could, however, have been cousins. Richard died in 1843 and was buried at St Hibald on 3 September 20376 Phoebe died in 1859 and was buried at St Andrew, Wootton, on 1 August 32045[52].

Winifred and Jonathan had three children:

#3.1 William Fox (1833-1907)[53]

#3.2 Judith Phoebe Fox (1835-1906)[54]

#3.3 Edward John Fox (1837-1866)[55]

Ø   Winifred Fox died in 1838[56].

Ø   1841: Judith and Edward with grandparents Richard and Phoebe Fox in Kirton-in-Lindsey[57]; whereabouts of Jonathan and William not known.

Ø   1843: Jonathan married Mary Ann Marshall on 2 May at Holy Trinity, Hull.[58] Jonathan and Mary Ann had several children[59].

Ø   1884: Jonathan Fox died[60].

#3.2 Judith Phoebe Fox

Judith lived with her grandparents in Kirton-in-Lindsey (1841)

Ø   1851: Judith’s whereabouts not known

Ø   1861: Judith governess in home of Richard Eddie, Rector of St Luke, Broughton Sulney, Nottinghamshire[61].

Ø   1864: Judith married a surgeon, Frederick Horatio Atkinson[62].

Ø   1871: Family in Leverton[63].

Ø   1881: Family in Bennington by Boston[64].

Ø   1891: Family in Grimsby[65].

Ø   1901: Family in Grimsby[66].

Ø   1906: Judith Atkinson died in Grimsby[67].

William and Edward were both chemists and druggists and lived for a time in Westerham in Kent (details in Part II).

#4 Thomas Gurnell and his sister #5 Charlotte Joanna Gurnell married a sister and brother from Dartford in Kent – Mary Ann Hammond and Frederick Hammond.

The Hammond family will be covered in Part II.
