The Edgell Story 2

The Edgell Family Story
Part 2

Having looked at Sarah Tucker’s parents in Part 1, over the next two parts Pea-Bee turns his attention to her siblings…

Of Benjamin Tucker’s 10 children with Mary (nee Selway) only three are known to have reached adulthood and married. The oldest was:

Henry Tucker
Henry Tucker (b1820) married Thirza Bryant (daughter of a coalminer, Daniel Bryant and his wife Hannah), from Kilmersdon on 7 July 1842 at Writhlington[1].

Henry was also a coalminer and at sometime between 1843 and 1844, he moved with his family from Somerset to the Durham coalfield.

In all, he and Thirza had five children:
·         William Tucker (1843-1919) born Wellow, Somerset, and baptised 7 May 1843[2]
·         George Tucker (1844-1853) born East Hetton, Durham, and baptised 5 March 1849[3]
·         Tom Tucker (1846-1922) born East Hetton, Durham, and baptised 5 March 1849[4]
·         Frederick Tucker (1849-1852) born in Easington, Durham, and baptised 5 March 1849[5]
·         Francis Tucker (1851-1917) born in Kelloe, Durham[6]

Henry Tucker died of typhus on 30 December 1852[7]. The typhus epidemic in the area at the end of 1852 not only claimed Henry’s life but also those of two of his sons – George and Frederick[8].

About the same time, another Durham miner, Thomas Richardson, lost his wife Jane, leaving him with young children to bring up[9].

In 1854, Thirza Tucker married Thomas Richardson[10] and the couple brought up Thirza’s three surviving children, Thomas’s two, and had two more of their own[11]. Thirza died in 1892[12] and Thomas the following year[13].

Of Henry and Thirza’s surviving children
William Tucker married Jane Ann Young (1847-1919) in South Shield registration district in 1866[14]. Jane was the daughter of a Northumberland coalminer, James Young (1807-1877[15]), and his wife Jane (b 1815).

Jane Ann Young had been born in Long Benton, Northumberland, in 1847[16] and the Young family had come Durham coal village of Hetton-le-Hole in about 1850. Her parents were to stay in Hetton-le-Hole for the rest of their lives[17].

William and Jane were in Hetton-le-Hole in 1871[18] and then lived in Houghton le Spring[19] until their deaths: William Tucker dying on 20 August 1919[20] and Jane Ann Tucker less than a month later on 13 September[21]. [Fig 1]

William and Jane Ann Tucker had eight children:
  • ·     Isabella Tucker (1867-post 1881[22]) It has not proved possible to trace her life after she was 14 years old.
  • ·         Elizabeth Tucker (1869-1925[23]) was living with her grandmother Jane Young in 1881[24] but in 1887, she emigrated to Australia with an uncle, Robert Young, and his family[25]. She married Joseph Holdsworth (1868-1924[26]) on 28 May 1890 in Rockhampton, Queensland[27]. Joseph was described at that time as a miner, and was the son of Benjamin and Mary Holdsworth. Benjamin, a mechanical engineer, had taken his family to Australia in April 1884[28]. Joseph and Elizabeth Holdsworth had at least two children in Australia before they returned to the UK. Joseph had become a mechanic like his father and the family lived first in Salford[29], then Ashton-under-Lyne[30], and then near Truro[31]. Five more children were born to them in England. Joseph worked in Nigeria[32] and in the 1920s was appointed Crown Agent in Casablanca in French Morocco. He and Elizabeth went to live there. In 1924, Joseph was taken ill and died of suspected meningitis and while his widow return to the UK after his burial, she too was taken ill and died in a London hospital in 1925[33]. Joseph's father commemorated his son on his wife's grave in Queensland [Fig 2]
  • ·         Henry Tucker (1874-1951[34]) married a local girl, Mary Bruce (1877-1949[35]), at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Houghton-le-Spring on 17 February 1897[36] where they were to live throughout their lives[37]. The couple had one child, but it died in infancy[38]. Henry did not follow his father or brothers down the mines but became a draper like is father-in-law, George Bruce[39]. Henry was one of the executors of George Bruce’s will when he died on 7 November 1910. His estate was valued at over £11,500[40]. Henry was also sole executor for Jane Anne Bruce, his mother-in-law, when she died on 3 February 1928[41]. Henry’s own estate in 1951 was valued at £12,800[42].
  • ·         Ralph Tucker (1877-1962[43]) became a coalminer and married Hannah Jane Brownlee (1882-1962[44]) from Castlefield, Durham, in Tynemouth registration district in 1904[45]. When Ralph died on 27 April 1962, he was buried with his parents, and his widow joined them when she died later the same year on 23 December[46].
  • ·         Lydia Tucker (1879-post 1940[47]) married coalminer Charles Scott (1876-post 1940[48]) on 2 November 1899[49] and emigrated to the USA, sailing from Liverpool on 13 September arriving in Boston on 22 September 1910[50]. Charles and Lydia Scott had five children in all: the eldest, William Scott, died of menigitis in Houghton-le-Spring aged 3[51]; another three were also born in Houghton-le-Spring and travelled with them to America; and the youngest was born in Virden, Illinois[52].
  • ·         Jane Tucker (1881-post 1911[53]) It has not proved possible to trace her life after 1911 when she was living in her brother Henry’s household as a domestic servant.
  • ·         Robertina Tucker (1886-1970[54]) married coalminer William Allen (1887-1959[55]) in Houghton-le-Spring in 1909[56] and had a daughter before 1911[57]. It is not known if they had any subsequent children.
  • ·         James Tucker (1888-post 1942[58]) was also a coalminer who married Isabella Marlow (1891-post 1942[59]) in Houghton-le-Street in 1910[60] and a few months later the couple had a child, Henry Tucker, who died within a few days[61]. James followed his sister and his brother-in-law to Virden, Illinois in September 1913[62] and Isabella and a second son, William Tucker (1912-[63]) followed two months later[64]. James and Isabella then had a daughter, named after her mother[65]. In 1918, James Tucker enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force as an engineer[66], and sailed for Europe, returning in July 1919[67]. The family was in the Chicago area in 1930 and 1940[68] not far from James’s sister Lydia Scott and her family.
