Hammond, Gurnell and Fox - Part IIi A

Hammond, Gurnell and Fox – Part IIIa

The third family in this story, the Hammonds, came from the north west of Kent. It was a large family and I have divided the story in two.

Ø   1765: William Hammond married Elizabeth Simmons at Gillingham, Kent, 23 January[1]. The couple had a number of children including Simmons Hammond (1777-1849).

Ø   1777: Simmons Hammond, baptised at Holy Trinity, Dartford, on 19 October[2].

Ø   1800: Simmons Hammond married Mary Ann Essenhigh at St Peter Cornhill, London, on 19 November[3]. Mary Ann Essenhigh had been born in Dartford and baptised in the spring of 1782[4].

Over the next 20 years the couple had twelve children, all baptised at Holy Trinity, Dartford. At least four died in infancy and were buried at Holy Trinity:

#H1.4 Simmons Hammond: born 20 July 1805, baptised 6 September 1805; buried 12 August 1807[5].

#H1.8 James Simmons Hammond: baptised 30 June 1813; buried 29 April 1814 “aged 13 months”[6].

#H1.9 Ann Hammond: baptised 21 February 1815; buried 1 February 1816 “aged 1”[7].

#H1.10 Henry Marryatt Hammond: baptised 15 April 1817; buried 27 August 1818 “aged 18 months”[8].

Also perhaps:

#H1.2 Elizabeth Hammond: born 22 December 1802, baptised 20 February 1803[9].

Nothing is known about her, beyond the record of her baptism. Unfortunately the parish records for Holy Trinity for this period are illegible in parts and so it is not possible to determine if she did die in infancy.

The seven children who reached adulthood were:

#H1.1 William Essenhigh Hammond (1801-1857)[10]

#H1.3 George Simmons Hammond (1804-1873)[11]

#H1.5 Mary Ann Hammond (1808-1872)[12]

#H1.6 Catherine Hammond (1810-1880)[13]

#H1.7 Eliza Hammond (1811-1880)[14]

#H1.11 Edward Hammond (1818-post 1881)[15]

#H1.12 Frederick Hammond (1820-1885)[16]

Ø   1828: death of Mary Ann Hammond, buried at Holy Trinity, Dartford, 16 September “aged 46”[17].

Ø   1829: Simmons Hammond married Sarah Catherine Brown at St Nicholas, Brighton, 26 June[18]. No further records of Sarah have been found.

Ø   1841: Simmons Hammond, chemist, High Street, Dartford with daughter Mary Ann and son-in-law Thomas Gurnell[19].

Ø   1849: death of Simmons Hammond, buried at Holy Trinity, Dartford, 28 March “aged 72”[20].

More on Simmons Hammond’s life will appear in the “Business Links” blog

#H1.1. William Essenhigh Hammond

Ø   1801: William Essenhigh Hammond born 3 September, baptised 1 October[21].

Ø   1830: William Essenhigh Hammond married Lucy Maria Flinn at St Mary, Long Ditton, Surrey, 13 February[22]. She was the daughter of John and Lucy Flinn, born in Covent Garden 26 December 1803[23]. The couple had one child, a son:

#H1.1.1 William Flinn Hammond (1843-1872)[24]

Ø   1841: William and Lucy in New Brentford; William a stout merchant. Also in house: Edward Hammond (William’s brother) oil presser, John Essenhigh (William’s uncle) assistant (whether to William or Edward, not clear), Caroline Flinn (Lucy’s sister) and Amy Jacobs (relationship unknown)[25].

Ø   1851: Family in Oil Mills, Rotherhithe; William clerk to seed crusher[26].

Ø   1857: death of William Essenhigh Hammond in Dartford, buried 11 August[27].

Ø   1858: death of Lucy Maria Hammond in Lambeth 14 July, buried at Nunhead Cemetery 21 July[28]. Her estate was valued at under £100 and her sister, Eliza, was the executrix[29].

Ø   1861: William Flinn Hammond in Stratford upon Avon; chemist’s apprentice[30].

Ø   1871: whereabouts of William Flinn Hammond not known.

Ø   1872: death of William Flinn Hammond in Notting Hill, 22 January and burial at Dartford, “aged 29”, 27 January[31].

More on William Essenhigh Hammond’s life will appear in the “Business Links” blog

#H1.3 George Simmons Hammond

Ø   1804: George Hammond  born 27 January; baptised  6 February[32].

Although the baptismal record is simply George Hammond, someone with the name George Simmonds Hammond (with a ‘d’ in his second name) frequently appears in later records: when his children were baptised at different churches in south London (and two children more than once), the father’s name is given as George Simmonds Hammond for some and for others the name is just George Hammond. The form of the name as George Simmonds Hammond (with or without the extra ‘d’) was also used when some of his children married and again when he died, but never in any census. There is, however, a problem: in all three censuses in which he appears, George gave his place of birth as Charlton, Kent (whether the Charlton near Canterbury or the village in south London near Woolwich is not known). When George Hammond, son of Simmons Hammond of Dartford, was baptised – at Dartford – there was no indication that he was born in another parish. Also, the George Simmonds Hammond who lived and died in Camberwell is always referred to as a labourer (sometimes as a labourer in a gasworks), which seems an unusual occupation for the son of the businessman, Simmons Hammond.

Ø   1827: George Simmonds Hammond married Caroline Job on Christmas Day at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street[33]. Caroline was the daughter of Charles and Unea Job and had been born in Rotherhithe on 14 March 1805[34]. They had seven children:

#H1.3.1 George Simmons Hammond (1826-1885)[35]

#H1.3.2 Caroline Elizabeth Hammond (1830-)[36]

#H1.3.3 Frances Sarah Hammond (1833-1879)[37]

#H1.3.4 Charlotte Ann Hammond (1835-1862)[38]

#H1.3.5 Emma Matilda Hammond (1838-)[39]

#H1.3.6 Louisa Harriott Hammond (1842-)[40]

#H1.3.7 Elizabeth Mary Hammond (1845-)[41]

Ø   1841: Family in Caroline Street, Peckham, George a labourer[42].

Ø   1851: Family at 2 Woodbine Cottage, Alpha Street, Camberwell; George a labourer at gasworks[43].

Ø   1861: Family at 6 Milstead Terrace, Church Street, Camberwell; George a labourer[44].

Ø   1871: Family at 16 Chruch Street, Camberwell; no occupation given for George[45].

Ø   1873: death of George Simmonds Hammond in Camberwell[46].

#H1.5 Mary Ann Hammond

Ø   1808: Mary Ann Hammond born 9 September 1808; baptised 23 October[47].

Ø   1838: Mary Ann Hammond married Thomas Gurnell (see below) on 17 October at Dartford. She shared her wedding day with her sister Catherine. A witness to both weddings was their brother, William Essenhigh Hammond[48]. The couple did not have any children.

Ø   1841: Mary Ann and Thomas Gurnell at High Street, Dartford, with Mary’s father Simmons Hammond; Thomas a chemist and druggist.[49]

Ø   1851: Thomas Gurnell at High Street, Dartford, with nephew William Fox; Thomas chemist and druggist. Mary Ann Gurnell with brother #H1.12 Edward Hammond in Brentford[50].

Ø   1861: Mary Ann and Thomas Gurnell at High Street, Dartford, with Mary’s niece #H1.11.5 Florence Hammond; Thomas a chemist and druggist.[51]

Ø   1864: death of Thomas Gurnell in Dartford, 29 August, burial 3 September. His executor was Mary Ann and his estate was valued at under £3,000[52].

Ø   1871: whereabouts of Mary Ann Gurnell not known.

Ø   1872: death of Mary Ann Gurnell, “late of Overy Street, Dartford”, at The Gore, Sittingbourne 7 January 1872: her brother Frederick Hammond was her executor for an estate valued at under £200[53].
