Hammond, Gurnell and Fox – Part II


Whereas the other members of the Gurnell and Fox families were, in the main, involved in farming and remained in Lincolnshire, the five people covered in this part were connected with the pharmacy trade and moved south, to Kent and the Isle of Wight. It is their work as druggists that is important to the Business Links section that will appear in a later Pea-Bee Blog.


#G1.3 William Gurnell

William Gurnell was the third son of #G1 George Gurnell and Ann nee Thompson who was baptised at St Hilbald, Hilbaldstow, Lincolnshire on 11 October 1840[1]. He lived with his parents in Hilbalstow (1841) and Sturton-cum-Scarby (1851). His whereabouts in 1861 is unknown

Ø   1871: William Gurnell at 34 Union Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight; William a chemist[2].

Ø   1873: William Gurnell married Mary Colenutt, 28 October[3]. Mary had been born in Ryde in 1849[4]. The couple had five children:

Ø   1881: Family at 34 Union Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight; William a chemist[10].

Ø   1891: Family at 34 Union Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight; William a chemist[11].

Ø   1901: Family (less Minnie and Thompson) at Wellesley House, London Road, Farlington, Hampshire; William a chemist and stationer[12],

Ø   1911: William, Mary and Richard in London Road, Waterlooville, Hampshire; William retired chemist[13].

Ø   1925: death of William Gurnell in Croydon registration district[14].

Ø   1947: death of Mary Gurnell in Croydon registration district[15].

#G1.3.1 Minnie Gurnell

Minnie Gurnell was with her parents in Ryde in 1881 and 1891.

Ø   1898: Minnie Gurnell married a cousin, #G3.1.2 Ernest Edward Fox, in Havant registration district[16]. The couple had three children.

Ø   1901: Family in Coghurst Villa, Old London Road, Ore, Hastings, Sussex; Ernest a chartered accountant, Minnie an artist in oils[17].

Ø   1911: Family in Kent Hotel, 382 Old London Road, Ore, Hastings, Sussex; Ernest Fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants[18].

Ø   1943: Ernest Edward Fox died in Sussex[19].

#G1.3.2 William Gurnell

William Gurnell was with his parents in Ryde (1881 and 1891) and at Farlington (1901). In 1901 he was described as a chemist’s manager.

Ø   1905: William Gurnell married Florence Annie Jones in Kensington. The couple had two daughters[20].

Ø   1911: Family at Market Place, Westerham, Kent; William a chemist[21].

Ø   1962: Florence Annie Gurnell, of  Honeysuckle Cottage, Bighton, Hampshire died at Wimble Hill Hospital, Crondall, Hampshire 5 March[22].

Ø   1965: William Gurnell, of  Honeysuckle Cottage, Bighton, Hampshire died at Alton Hospital, Hampshire 19 December[23].

 

#G3.1 William Fox

William Fox was the eldest son of Jonathan Fox and #G3 Winifred nee Gurnell. He was born in Wootton, Lincolnshire and baptised there on 15 September 1833[24]. His whereabouts in 1841 is not known

Ø   1851: William Fox was with his uncle, Thomas Gurnell, in Dartford, Kent[25].

Ø   1860: William Fox married Ellen Maria Brookes at The Church of The Saviour, Edward Street, Birmingham, 19 March[26]. William was listed as a chemist of 30 Parliament Street, York, and Ellen of 30a Broad Street, Birmingham, as the daughter of John Enoch Brookes, a watch and clock maker. Ellen had been born in Stratford-on-Avon in 1839[27]. The couple had one daughter:

#G3.1.1 Ellen Mary Fox (1861-post 1911)[28]

Ø   1861:  Family at Parliament Street, York; William a chemist[29]

Ø   1862: William Fox, chemist, Chapel Place, Tunbridge Wells; Kent[30]

Ø   1867: William Fox, Market Place, Westerham, Kent[31]

Ø   1867: Ellen Maria Fox died at Westerham, Kent[32]

Ø   1869: William Fox married Frances Caroline Atherford at St James, Paddington, 22 June[33]. Frances was born in Westerham and was baptised on 10 January 1836[34]. The couple had one son:

#G3.1.2 Ernest Edward Fox (1872-1943)[35]

Ø   1871: Family in High Street, Westerham, Kent; William a chemist[36].

Ø   1881: Family in High Street, Westerham, Kent; William a chemist[37].

Ø   1891: Family in High Street, Westerham, Kent; William a chemist[38].

Ø   1901: Family in Market Place, Westerham, Kent; William a chemist[39].

Ø   1907 William Fox died 8 September. His executrix was his widow Frances and his effects were valued at £583 1s 1d[40]

Ø   1911: Frances Caroline Fox with son in Hastings[41]

Ø   1919: Frances Caroline Fox, of 416 Old London Road, Hastings, died 14 February. Her son was executor of her estate valued at £179 6s 6d[42].

#3.3 Edward John Fox

Edward Fox was also a son of Jonathan Fox and #G3 Winifred nee Gurnell. He was born in Wootton, Lincolnshire and baptised there on 30 May 1837[43]. He lived with his grandparents in Kirton-in-Lindsey (1841) and with his father and stepmother in Waddingham (1851)

Ø   1861: Edward Fox was a patient in Guy’s Hospital, described as a draper’s assistant[44].

Ø   1866: Edward Fox, “late of Westerham, Kent, chemist and druggist, died 12 March. His executor was his brother #G3.1 William Fox and his estate was under £450[45].
