Redhill Admissions 1857

Redhill Admissions 1857

There were several boys admitted to the Redhill Farm School in 1857 who were later transferred to the Adel Reformatory in Leeds. In January 1857, a meeting in Leeds, under the chairmanship of the mayor, resolved that a boys’ reformatory school should be established for convicted juveniles. The institution was to be run by a voluntary body, the Leeds Society for the Reformation of Juvenile Offenders, a committee of public spirited citizens. The reformatory’s first buildings were erected during 1857 and certified on 2 December 1857 for the accommodation of up to 60 boys.

Redhill Admissions 1856

Until about the middle of the year, courts were still sending juvenile offenders to the county gaols or houses of correction for long periods. However, gradually the prison authorities started transferring these boys to Reformatories and before long, the courts were passing sentences of short gaol terms followed by several years at a Reformatory, in some cases specifying Redhill or the Philanthropic Society.
